What Is Healthy Eating?

What Is Healthy Eating?

If you made a pledge to eat healthier this year, congratulations! Being mindful of what and how you eat is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and those you love.

It’s also great for us! We want you to live a long, healthy life full of the New York bagels you love. That’s right, there’s no reason to eliminate all the foods you love – like NY bagels – from your diet.

What the Experts Say

When it comes to what we eat, there is always some hot new diet or trend. But eating a healthy diet is not the same thing as being on a diet.
Healthy eating is a lifestyle.

If you want to follow an expert’s advice, check out what Michael Pollan has to say. “Most of what we’re consuming today is not food, and how we’re consuming it — in the car, in front of the TV, and increasingly alone — is not really eating,” it says on his website. “Instead of food, we’re consuming ‘edible foodlike substances’ — no longer the products of nature but of food science.”

His often quoted advice:

  • Eat food (rather than those “foodlike substances”)
  • Mostly plants
  • Not too much

It’s also important to note that eating healthy is about more than the food on your plate.

As Laura Iu, registered dietitian and intuitive eating specialist, told Cosmopolitan magazine, “Healthy eating is all-encompassing. It’s your physical health, your mental health, and your emotional well-being.”

In other words, Cosmo says, “It’s not a list of healthy things you did or didn’t eat in a day. It’s eating in a way that makes you feel physically and mentally and emotionally good.”

Bagels Don’t Grow on Bushes

It’s true, as much as we love our New York bagels, they do not grow on bushes, trees or vines, but they are real food, made with wholesome ingredients. We think Mr. Pollan would approve.

Just remember, eating healthy doesn’t mean you have to sit down to a salad with dressing on the side for lunch every day – unless you want to! (Some salads, of course, can be delicious, healthy and anything but boring.)
